I graduated from Sir George Williams University with a B.A. and then received a Bachelor of Social Sciences and an M.A. in Criminology from the Université de Montréal. Sometime during this period I grew up and changed my name from Solly to Sol.
In 1963, I married my childhood sweetheart Shayna (Hubscher) who had pursued me since the age of 13 when we met at Camp Ma-Ka-Bee. We have three children; Corey (36), Jordannah (33) and Seth (30), as well as three grandsons.
My working career began when I joined the federal Department of the Solicitor General in Ottawa. My first position was as a Research Officer which involved visiting federal penitentiaries in Quebec. In one institution, I bumped into a few of my high school buddies (not the class of ’57, of course) who were not working there as staff (names withheld to protect the guilty), an unanticipated early high school reunion. I then climbed the bureaucratic ranks (including a stint at Health and Welfare and Fitness Canada) to my eventual level of incompetence. In 1991, I left the Public Service to establish a Management Consulting firm, specializing in information management, research and evaluation. As a Broker, I also help Shayna with her real estate business, which she has been doing in Ottawa for the past 35 years (aside from mothering and a term as a city councillor in the ‘90s).
I continue to pursue social and environmental causes and try to remain active by golfing (not very good) and skiing (somewhat better). This past winter I laced on my 50+ year old Bauer skates and took my 7 year old grandson to the Rideau Canal where he almost out-skated me.
I am very much looking forward to meeting my old friends, and basketball and football team-mates (they are not necessarily mutually exclusive) to reminisce about how well we undistinguished ourselves on the courts, at Rockland Park and at other playing fields.
